This statuette is a sculpted hardwood Mossi doll.
The Mossi ethnic group is the majority population of Burkina Faso. This Mossi doll is also called Biiga which means child in Mooré. Symbol of fertility, it is offered to the little girl by her parents. Once married, she will take her to her marital home. The young woman will then take care of it like a real infant carrying it on the back sometimes in public. During childbirth, the doll receives the same care as the newborn.
