Noé’s inspiration for this Y lamp came to him during his visit to the cliffs of Bandiagara in Mali. There he discovered ladders made from a single piece of wood, a common object in West Africa, especially in the Dogon and Lobi cultures. They provide access to the roof terraces of the houses where the cereals are dried. The iconic shape of these ladders thus gave birth to this sculptural and totemic lamp.
“The idea of using a single material really spoke to me. The simplicity of the Y shape impressed me. It is a particular shape mainly because of its fragility: there is only one foot, but the two arms pointing upwards and leaning against a surface make it extremely stable,” explains Noé.
